TIKAL

Tikal National Park was declared by UNESCO in 1979 “Patrimony of Humanity” since it constitutes an important natural reserve and houses one of the world’s greatest archeological treasures.

The city of Tikal was inhabited by the Mayan civilization from 800 B.C. to 900 A.D. During that period the Mayan culture reached a high level of development. They were the only Pre-Colombian civilization that developed a writing system and which included the zero in its number system.

Tikal consists of 3,000 identified structures ! But don’t feel overwhelmed by that ! It’s possible to go round the major areas already restored and enjoy this archeological wonder. In general the first stop is in the Main Plaza, where Temple I or “The Great Jaguar Temple” ( 44 mts. high ), and Temple II or “The Temple of the Masks” ( 38 mts. high ), can be observed.

Temple IV or “The Two-Headed Serpent Temple”, is Tikal´s tallest structure with a height of 65 mts. The public is permitted to climb to the pinnacle in order to get the best possible and most beautiful view of the entire area.
